Resort Chat: Dia Reeves

The Book Resort is thrilled to have the terrific Dia Reeves over for a little chat.

Dia is one of the amazing tenners!

Ready? Let's go!

Me: What are you working on now? (If you can give us a hint!)

DR: Right now I’m working on (and almost finished with) Strange Fruit. It’s not a sequel to Bleeding Violet—I don’t do sequels—but it does take place in the same creepy town. It’s about the daughters of a serial killer who fall for the sons of their father’s last victim. Well that’s partly what it’s about—it’s not a romance by any means. Those sisters have MAJOR issues. ;)

Me: Spiderman or Superman:

DR: Pippi Longstocking. She was an awesome superhero.

Me: Wonder Woman or Batgirl:

DR: Wonder Woman hands down. Cool outfit, kickass theme song (“Get us out from under, Wonder Womaaan!”) totally empowered. Even though her alter ego was a complete mouse.

Me: Chunky or Smooth:

DR: Smooth. Don’t like nuts.

Me: Favorite flavor ice cream:

DR: Neapolitan!

Me: Favorite ice cream topping:

DR: Fruit—strawberries, pineapples, and peaches especially—but only over vanilla ice cream.

Me: Subway or Taxi:

DR: Subway. I’m broke as a joke.

Me: Show or Movie Theater:

DR: Movie. Live shows make me nervous. I’m always afraid the actors will fall off the stage.

Me; TiVO or DVR:

DR: DVR. I’m getting one for Christmas so I have to say that.

Me: Favorite vacation place:

DR: Europe. Even though it’s been years since I’ve been over there.

Me: Next vacation destination:

DR: I’m planning to go on a cruise up to Canada next year.

Me: Favorite NYC hotspot:

DR: I’ve only been to NYC once, about ten years ago. I don’t think a hotdog stand in Central Park counts as a hotspot.

Me: Guilty Pleasure:

DR: The Violet books by Melissa Walker; The Real Housewives of New York; bodice rippers, crappy movies like The Blue Lagoon and Gymkata.

Me: Good luck charm:

DR: Nada. I’m not superstitious.

Me: When you were a little girl, you thought you would grow up to be a….

DR: Travel agent.

Me: Last thing bought at the mall:

DR: I don’t go to malls. They’re like these huge dying monsters. They scare me.

Me: Item on your grocery list:

DR: A last bag of apples before I get my braces.

Me: French fries or Onion Rings:

DR: Onion rings.

Me: Pizza: New York or Chicago?

DR: I never had Chicago style pizza. Chicago style hotdogs are real yummy, though.

Me: Midnight snack:

DR: Cereal, usually.

Me: Bookmark or dog ear?

DR: Bookmark. I grew out of dogearing.

Me: Read with dustjacket or remove it?

DR: I remove dustjackets. They annoy me.

Me: Ocean, Lake, Desert, Mountain:

DR: Ocean.

Me: Favorite book:

DR: The Gunslinger by Stephen King.

Me: Item you can't live without:

DR: My backpack. It’s got all my crap in it.

Me: Who is your favorite writer that most people have never heard of?

DR: CHELSEA CAIN!!!!!! And CELESTE CONWAY!!!!!!!! The double C’s give them special writing powers. J

Me: What kid or teen books made a difference in your world growing up?

DR: The Neverending Story, A Wrinkle in Time, It, all the Ramona Quimby books, A Bridge to Terebithia.

Me: Where do you like to write your books (bed ~ coffee shop ~ an office)?

DR: Couch or dining table. Sometimes in bed.

Me: Describe your ideal place to write:

DR: An office. Maybe one day.

Me: What are you reading @ the moment?

DR: The Magicians by Lev Grossman.

Me: Where do you usually read?

DR: In the bathtub. I take long baths.

Me: Do you usually have more than one book you are reading at a time?

DR: YES! I’ve got about seven right now on rotation.

Me: Do you read nonfiction in a different way or place than you read fiction?

DR: With non-fiction, I just read the part I’m interested in and skip the rest. Unless it’s something good like Coming of Age in the Milky Way or Edison’s Eve.
